Conference Tutorials

The IEEE-IAS-PCIC 2026 Tutorial Subcommittee is sponsoring half-day tutorials on Thursday, September 24, 2026.  Included in your tutorial registration fee are breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

IEEE Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs) are available for attending tutorials at an additional nominal fee if needed to maintain your State professional engineering registration.

Attending tutorials is an excellent opportunity to interact with leading Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)  whether to learn new technology or refresh your knowledge.  The tutorials and associated means and breaks also provide a networking opportunity to meet the instructor and other tutorial attendees.

First time attendees registered for the full conference are eligible to attend one tutorial for the reduced rate of $50.00.  IEEE Member Students are eligible to attend one tutorial for free if they are registered for the full conference.  The deadline for discounted tutorial registration is September 1.  Additional tutorials may be added at the published rate at any time.

NOTE: Pre-registration for tutorials is necessary as it allows the presenter to prepare sufficient handout materials. If space permits, conference attendees not pre-registered can attend tutorials by paying full price at the registration desk (handout material may be subject to availability).

The following tutorials are planned for the 2026 conference.  Scroll down for more information.
Tutorial PCIC 2026-1:  Protecting New NEMA Design BE & CE Motors
Tutorial PCIC 2026-2: NFPA 70E Standard For Electrical Safety In The Workplace, Changes For The 2027 Edition
Tutorial PCIC 2026-3: ASD; Low Voltage Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) Basics & Advanced Topics On Condition Based Monitoring, Energy Efficiency, Harmonics, Hybrid, & Cyber
Tutorial PCIC 2026-4: Electric Motors Operating in Hazardous Areas of Petro/Chem Process Industry
Tutorial PCIC 2026-5: Protection & Control in Distribution Switchgear using Current & Voltage Sensors
Tutorial PCIC 2026-6: Performance & Testing of Liquid Filled Power & Distribution Transformers

Morning Tutorials:

Tutorial PCIC 2026-1
Protecting New NEMA Design BE & CE Motors
Lorraine Padden - Padden Engineering LLC

Abstract: This Tutorial presents new information in the 2026 National Electrical Code® (NEC®) (NFPA 70) for new NEMA Design BE and CE induction motors with super premium efficiencies having a locked rotor current in the range of eight to ten times full load current and asymmetrical inrush current up to 27.5 times full load current. The motor and branch-circuit protection information will include: motor characteristics, overload, short-circuit, ground fault, and conductor protection. Over the last decade, combination motor controller testing has transitioned from UL 508 to UL 60947-4-1 which changed some of the testing for contactors and the controller components. Testing and certification options will be presented for motor controllers exposed to high inrush current. Example applications, including the most recent information in IEEE Std 3004.8 for state-of-the-art low-voltage fuses and circuit breakers, will be presented.

Tutorial PCIC 2026-2
NFPA 70E Standard For Electrical Safety In The Workplace, Changes For The 2027 Edition
Daryl Crow – DRC Consulting, Inc
Daleep Mohla – DCM Consulting

Abstract: Every three years NFPA 70E is updated and revised based on the actions taken by the 70E Technical Committee and National Electrical Code Correlating Committee on the recommended revisions received from Public Inputs (PIs).  The tutorial will include key changes to the NFPA 70E-2027 edition.  Attendees are cautioned to consult the full document as published prior to making any changes to their safe work practices.

Tutorial PCIC 2026-3
ASD; Low Voltage Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) Basics & Advanced Topics On Condition Based Monitoring, Energy Efficiency, Harmonics, Hybrid, & Cyber
Gary Baase - Danfoss
Eric Kellet - Danfoss

Abstract: This tutorial session will cover the basics of Low Voltage AC Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD) and their applications as well as going more in-depth into the topics of condition-based monitoring, remote monitoring, remote support, energy efficiency, power factor, best practices for selecting input and output devices in a ASD system, harmonics, hybrid solutions and the importance of cyber security within operational technology devices. The attendee will learn how to utilize these principles and take advantage of these trending technologies for a more cost-effective operation. The tutorial will be useful for those who are involved in specifying ASDs, designing, and operating plant installations.

 Afternoon Tutorials:

Tutorial PCIC 2026-4
Electric Motors Operating in Hazardous Areas of Petro/Chem Process Industry
Bharat Mistry - GE Retired
Javier Portos - IPS
Jeremy Smith - BP
William Lawrence - FM Approval

Abstract: Electric motors are the principal drivers of machinery such as pumps, compressors, extruders, fans, etc. Those drive trains require mechanical power from less than 1 kW to more than 100,000 kW. The consideration for motors through the design and specification stage, installation, and during life-cycle repair and reconditioning requires special consideration. This is especially true for those motors operating in hazardous areas, such as Division 1 / Zone 1 or Division 2 / Zone 2 areas. Local codes, regulations and standards determine or specify various protection techniques for safe operation of such electric motors.

Tutorial PCIC 2026-5
Protection & Control in Distribution Switchgear using Current & Voltage Sensors
Dr. Harsh Karandikar  VP, Product Management, ABB
Dr. Lukas Cesky, ABB

Abstract: In the past decade, there has been noticeable growth in the use of low-power instrument transformers (LPITs aka Sensors) based on the Rogowski coil principle for current and resistive or capacitive voltage divider principles for voltage. These advanced technologies have been utilized in various applications from primary to secondary distribution in both outdoor and indoor applications. LPIT provides an advanced alternative to using conventional instrument transformers in electrical distribution solution systems for measurement, power quality, and protection applications. This tutorial will cover an evaluation of the performance of both design philosophies. It will deal with the standardization of LPIT technology with a focus on the benefits connected with the latest standards from the IEC 61869 family. Finally, we will cover the integration of this technology into distribution switchgear and the significant resulting added value in terms of safety, sustainability and performance.

Tutorial PCIC 2026-6
Performance & Testing of Liquid Filled Power & Distribution Transformers
Fred Dixon - LyondellBasel
Derek Robey - ExxonMobil

Abstract: This four hour tutorial course will provide an initial introduction to the basic theory and application of three phase Power and Distribution transformers using equivalent circuits of an ideal transformer. There will be discussions around impedance ratio, efficiency and losses, exciting/magnetizing currents and core loss currents. Discussions concerning types of cores such as, Core and Shell forms. There will be actual pictures of transformer core prior to windings installed. Discussion concerning Turn Ratio and Voltage Regulation. There will be discussions on how to analyze transformer nameplates to determine proper operating temperature ranges and phase displacement. There will be discussions on the types of oil preservation systems and the thermodynamic functions of different insulating fluids during normal and abnormal operations. There will be discussions on the type oil testing while the transformer is in operation such as; Dissolved Gas Analyses, Furan Analysis. Discussions on different Liquid Screening Tests, such as; moisture, acidity, density, interfacial tension, liquid power factor and dielectric. Course will show how to analyze de-energized test reports such as Current Excitation, insulation power factor (Tan Delta and Dielectric Absorption), TTR, winding resistance test, insulation resistance test. Discuss Load Tap Changers and No Load Tap Changers. Methods to ensure correct transformers can be connected in parallel. Course will provide typical values to indicate when transformers are operating in the pending failure zones.
