HISTORIC PHILADELPHIA: Birthplace of Freedom

Sunday, September 20, 2026, 9:30AM-1:30PM & Monday, September 21, 2026, 9:30AM-1:30PM

Join your costumed guide on a stroll through the “most historic square mile in the United States”.  Walk along the same streets that Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and John Adams walked as you hear the dramatic story of America’s fight for freedom and the men and women who created the nation.

You will see the Liberty Bell, the hallowed symbol of our nation’s freedom; Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed; Congress Hall, where the first peaceful transfer of power took place; Franklin Court, the site of Benjamin Franklin's home and print shop; Christ Church where many of our Founding Fathers worshipped; the Betsy Ross house, the home of the seamstress who sewed our first “Stars and Stripes”; and Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously residential street in the country. You will go into as many of these sites as time and crowds’ permit.  (Note: As this is a walking tour, comfortable footwear is recommended.)

Bucks County and New Hope, PA

Sunday, September 20, 2026, 8:45AM-5:00PM

Tucked neatly within Philadelphia’s Countryside amidst rolling hillsides, working farms and picturesque old-time towns, Bucks County offers a particularly inviting landscape. Spend a nice, leisurely day exploring some of the sites and attractions that make this area unique.

Begin with a visit to Glen Foerd. The tour of this 18-acre riverfront estate will take you back in time to the roaring 1920s and explore the Industrial Age of Philadelphia. Financier Charles Macalester built this three-story Italianate riverfront house in 1850 along the banks of the Delaware River and called it Glengarry after his family’s Scottish ancestral home. The mansion’s interior architectural features include grand staircase, Haskell player pipe organ, stained glass Tiffany-style dome, parquet floors and a rathskellar.

You will then travel to the charming village of New Hope located along the banks of the Delaware River. New Hope alone is worthy of a visit to the region, there you’ll have some time to enjoy the eclectic shops, curiosities and restaurants, for lunch on your own.  Before returning to the city, we’ll stop at a local vineyard for a wine tasting. (Note: This tour includes walking, so wearing comfortable footwear is recommended.)

PHILADELPHIA: River to River

Monday, September 21, 2026, 1:30PM-3:30PM

William Penn planned the “City of Brotherly Love” between two rivers, the Schuylkill on the west side and the Delaware on the east side.  Starting at one river and ending at the other, this tour offers a panorama of our wonderful city and neighborhoods.

Take in the sites along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (the Champs Elysees of Philadelphia) such as Logan Circle, the Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art with its “Rocky” steps.  And of course, anyone who wants to will can tackle those famous steps.

Heading into the center of the city you will see the new Comcast Center where you will stop and watch the amazing multi-media show in the lobby which plays on the largest indoor video screen in the world; and City Hall with the massive statue of William Penn on top of the tower.  As you travel along Broad Street (the Avenue of the Arts) your guide will point out the Academy of Music, modeled after La Scala in Milan, and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra.  A drive along Pine Street past Antique Row and Pennsylvania Hospital (the nation’s first hospital) will bring you into Society Hill to see a bit of this charming 18th century neighborhood.

As we reach the east side of the city you will find the “most historic square mile in the United States”.  Learn about the people and events that occurred in such buildings as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Carpenters’ Hall, Franklin Court and Christ Church.

A Taste of Philly

Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 9:30AM-1:30PM

Enticing aromas will greet you as you enter Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market.  As you tour this vibrant and historic landmark you will learn the history of the market as well as the stories behind Philly’s favorite sandwiches such as cheesesteaks and hoagies; breakfast foods such as scrapple and sticky buns; and snacks such as soft pretzels and Goldenberg Peanut Chews; and other Philly food specialties.  And be sure to leave room to enjoy some small food bites along the way.

Then it’s on to the world-renowned Italian Market in South Philly.  This is the oldest and largest working outdoor market in the United States.  Still predominantly Italian, it offers the best of many cultures and cuisines to the shopper.

You will visit Termini Brothers Bakery, a Philadelphia landmark and one of our most unique and treasured traditions for over 80 years.  Termini’s offers a step into the past where technology takes a back seat to individual skill and ingenuity.  Using recipes and tools dating back to the 1920s, Termini’s depicts “the way it was”.  And of course, the visit would not be complete without a sample of one of their homemade Italian confections.

Another family owned and operated business is DiBruno Brothers “House of Cheese”.  This old world European-style cheese shop features over 400 different types of cheese and an overwhelming variety of gourmet foods from around the world. (Note: Since guests will be walking through the markets, comfortable footwear is recommended. Lunch is not provided but there will be samples along the way.)

Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) Country

Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 8:00AM-4:30PM

Journey back in time as you travel through the pastoral countryside of Lancaster County where your guide will acquaint you with the customs and lifestyles of these quiet people who live without the modern conveniences we take for granted.

Your Amish experience begins with the film “Jacob’s Choice”, a compelling story about a young man struggling with the choice to remain in the Amish church or leave behind family and community for the allure of the modern world.  Afterward you will learn a bit more about Amish traditions and practices, plain clothing and life without electricity during the tour of the Amish House and School that are featured in the film.  And in the one-room schoolhouse you’ll learn about the tradition of teaching eight grades in one room.

Lunch is always a favorite of guests on this tour.  Enjoy a real Pennsylvania Dutch style lunch (included) with all the trimmings including fried chicken, noodles, chow-chow and Shoo-fly pie.  You will also travel deep into the heartland of the oldest Amish community in the world during a tour of the farmlands.  Here you will experience a sense of work and family ethics that continue to mark the Amish way of life. There will also be time to shop for Amish specialties such as quilts and crafts, jams and relishes before returning to the hotel … and the 21st century. (Note: Comfortable footwear is recommended.)

Longwood Gardens and Winery Tour

Wednesday, September 23, 2026, 8:00AM-4:30PM

Longwood Gardens is sure to delight anyone who loves exquisite flowers, majestic trees and opulent architecture.  Listed as a “must see” in travel guides from around the world, this former du Pont estate and incredible showplace of gardens and greenhouses should not be missed!

Here, amid the 1050 outside acres and 20 indoor gardens, you will find perfection at every turn.  Spend some time enjoying the water gardens, arboretum, fountain displays and conservatories with their orchid displays, rose garden, bonsai display and desert house.  “Dining dollars” are included for lunch in their café.

Before our ride back to Philadelphia, you can enjoy a tasting at a local winery.  With a tradition dating back to 1982, Chaddsford Winery is among the oldest, largest and most acclaimed wineries in Pennsylvania.  (based on availability that day). (Note: Since guests will be walking through the gardens, comfortable footwear is recommended.)
